After years of searching for a sustainable source, we're delighted to have secured a limited, but sustainable, supply of Indian Sandalwood, which is renowned for its high quality. Growing wild in Sri Lanka, the small tropical sandalwood trees grow up to 10-15m. For every single tree they wish to extract oil from, the growers must first obtain a government licence before they can start to cut away the small branches. Once these branches have been removed, the trunk of the tree is exposed & the hardwood can be taken away to be expertly steam distilled. During the whole process, the growers take great care to ensure that the roots of the sandalwood tree are left intact. This ensures that the tree will eventually regrow into a new tree & help to maintain a healthy population of sandalwood trees. Then, when the tree reaches maturity, they must once again apply for a government license before the process can begin again. In addition to this, the growers also the plant new trees, helping to further prevent the extinction or exploitation of the sandalwood trees.
