For every single tree they wish to extract oil from, the growers must first obtain a government licence before they can start to cut away the small branches. Once these branches have been removed, the trunk of the tree is exposed & the hardwood can be taken away to be expertly steam distilled. During the whole process, the growers take great care to ensure that the roots of the sandalwood tree are left intact. This ensures that the tree will eventually regrow into a new tree & help to maintain a healthy population of sandalwood trees.
