One of the most revered directors of Taiwanese cinema, Edward Yang made his feature debut in 1983 with That Day, on the Beach. Featuring cinematography by Christopher Doyle, the Taiwanese New Wave classic stars Sylvia Chang & Terry Hu as old friends whose reminiscences & flashbacks gradually reveal their turbulent lives. That Day, on the Beach has been digitally remastered & re-released to mark the tenth anniversary of Yangs passing.
Concert pianist Wei Jing (Terry Hu) returns to Taiwan for a performance, & re-encounters her old friend Jia Lei (Sylvia Chang). In a caf, the two catch up & look back on their youth in their provincial hometown. Back then, Wei Jing & Jia Leis brother Jia Sen were lovers, but they were forced to break up because of the disapproval of Jia Leis father. Losing faith in love, Wei Jing ended up going overseas to study & became a renowned musician, but the emptiness in her heart remains. Meanwhile, Jia Lei pushes back against her fathers arranged marriage after witnessing her brothers unhappiness. She runs away from home, marries her college sweetheart & creates a family in Taipei. However, things begin to change after her husbands career takes off. When Jia Lei learns that her husband may have been found dead on a beach, she realizes that her marriage had already unraveled a while ago.
